What Is the Digitspan Game?
Digitspan presents a sequence of characters โ numbers and letters โ that flash on screen one at a time. Once the last character disappears, you must type back the entire sequence in the exact order it appeared.
The game is adaptive: get it right and the sequence grows by one character; get it wrong and it shrinks. The difficulty level you reach before making consistent errors is your effective score.
Most candidates start at length 4 and can reach 7โ9 with practice. Elite performers hit 9โ11.
What Digitspan Actually Measures
Digitspan is a classic measure of verbal working memory capacity โ your brain's ability to hold and manipulate information in the short term. It's one of the most replicated predictors of:

For example, the sequence 7 K 4 R 2 B is very hard to hold as six separate items. But chunked as 7K ยท 4R ยท 2B, it becomes three pairs โ much easier to recall.
With practice, you'll chunk automatically. The goal is to reach a point where a 7-character sequence feels like 3 items rather than 7.
Sub-Vocal Rehearsal
As each character appears, mentally "say" it quietly in your head. Then, during the brief gap after the last character, rapidly repeat the whole sequence in your mind before typing.
This technique โ called phonological rehearsal โ leverages your brain's phonological loop, a short-term buffer specifically designed for holding verbal sequences. Using it consciously and consistently can extend your effective span by 1โ2 characters.
The 10-Day Practice Protocol
Research on working memory training shows that consistent daily practice produces real, lasting improvements. Follow this schedule:
- Days 1โ3: 3 rounds per day, focusing on sequences of length 4โ5. Build the habit of chunking.
- Days 4โ6: 5 rounds per day, targeting length 6โ7. Push beyond your comfort zone each session.
- Days 7โ9: 7 rounds per day, targeting 7โ9. Focus on speed as well as accuracy.
- Day 10: 3 relaxed warm-up rounds only โ don't exhaust yourself before the real test.
